"Alzheimer's Advocate Rebecca Luna Chooses MAID"

A Canadian TikTok star who openly documented her struggle with Alzheimer’s disease through viral social media videos has ended her life at 49 using medical assistance in dying (MAID)

A Canadian TikTok star, Rebecca Luna, has tragically ended her life through medical assistance in dying (MAID) at the age of 49. Luna, who was based in Victoria, British Columbia, openly shared her journey with young-onset Alzheimer’s disease with her followers on social media. She passed away on July 25, 2023, at 1:15 PM, surrounded by her loved ones, as confirmed by a post from her TikTok account over the weekend.

Born in 1974, Rebecca Luna was diagnosed with young-onset Alzheimer’s at the age of 48, a condition that significantly affected her quality of life. In the lead-up to her passing, she candidly communicated with her approximately 93,000 followers about her declining health. In her final messages, she revealed that she had advanced her MAID date due to a rapid deterioration in her condition, expressing that living with Alzheimer’s felt increasingly unbearable.

In one of her emotional videos, Luna described the difficult decision to choose MAID: “It’s a hard decision to make,” she explained. “Because I’m living in a body that doesn’t feel safe, good, nothing. It feels terrible.” Her heartfelt messages highlighted the profound impact the disease had taken on her life, stripping away her sense of self and stability.

According to Statistics Canada, approximately 750,000 Canadians live with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, with the illness being more prevalent among women. Women are also twice as likely to die from the disease compared to men, showcasing the disproportionately high toll it takes on female populations.

In Luna’s absence, she leaves behind two daughters, who were mentioned in an online fundraiser initiated to cover her end-of-life expenses. An update to the fundraiser included a touching message from her eldest daughter, confirming Luna's death and expressing their family's grief during this difficult time.

Luna's story resonated deeply with many, as she used her platform to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease, sharing not only her struggles but also her reflections on life, love, and the importance of connection. Her death has prompted discussions around the complexities of living with such a debilitating condition and the difficult choices individuals may face regarding end-of-life care.

Her legacy will continue through her impactful social media presence and the awareness she brought to the challenges faced by those living with Alzheimer's disease. In a world where illness often goes unspoken, Rebecca Luna's brave openness serves as a poignant reminder of the human experience and the profoundly personal decisions that accompany it.
