Demolition has commenced at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, situated in northern British Columbia, following a tragic mass shooting that occurred earlier this year. The incident took place on February 10, 2023, and resulted in the loss of eight lives, including the shooter's mother and brother, who were killed in their family home. The shooter, identified as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, also killed five children and an educational assistant within the school before taking her own life as police approached.
Recent photographs shared on social media depict excavators dismantling the building, exposing pink insulation and accumulating metal debris at the site. This demolition aligns with a commitment made by both the provincial and federal governments to fund the establishment of a new secondary school in a different location. The collaboration was announced in a joint press release on May 7, whereby the Peace River South School Board sought assistance after consulting with victims' families, community members, and experts.
The press release emphasized the need for swift removal of the current school in a manner that is sensitive to the trauma experienced by the community. Many, including individuals who were formerly associated with the school, have expressed relief at the decision to demolish the premises. Stu Bell, who shared images of the demolition on social media, articulated his feelings of "massive relief" in his post. Bell, a former student of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and now a parent of teenagers in the community, echoed the sentiment that "the building must go."
The destruction of the school not only represents a physical change to the landscape of Tumbler Ridge but also signifies an effort to heal and move forward from the anguish caused by the events of February 10. The commitment to building a new school aims to provide a fresh start for the community and restore a sense of safety and normalcy in the lives of students and families affected by the tragedy.
