Another race concluded with an impressive victory for the filly Luster at the $1-million King's Plate held on Saturday. Notably, Luster started in fourth place as the horses rounded the final turn but surged ahead to finish with a remarkable 7 1/4-length lead. This win follows her previous triumph in the $750,000 Woodbine Oaks on July 19, where she dominated the field with a 5 1/2-length margin.

Renowned jockey John Velazquez piloted Luster, marking his second King's Plate win. His first victory in this prestigious race was aboard the filly Wonder Gadot in 2018. Velazquez also rode Luster during her impressive Oaks victory, affirming his successful partnership with the talented filly.

Reflecting on his achievements, Velazquez expressed gratitude for his experiences with fillies in major races. “I’ve been very lucky and very blessed with the fillies,” he said. His victory this year was particularly special as it involved competing against male contenders in a renowned Canadian event.

Trainer Josie Carroll celebrated her fourth King's Plate victory with this win, her first since 2020 when she triumphed with Mighty Heart. Carroll's previous successes were with Edenwold in 2006 and the filly Inglorious in 2011, further solidifying her status in the racing world.

In this intriguing race, Military Time, ridden by Fraser Aebly, secured second place, while Fire and Wine, aboard jockey Jalon Samuel, finished third. The rest of the top twelve included Dixie Law, Don Ique, Bond Market, Imyourmedicineman, Brachetto, Highwaytothemoon, Baaeed Alynna, Magical Factor, and Very Special.

Despite Luster's connections drawing the No. 1 post position on Tuesday, they strategically navigated the start of the race. Velazquez promptly moved Luster out of potential trouble, allowing her to settle comfortably in the fourth position behind competitors Fire and Wine, Very Special, and Magical Factor.

As the race progressed, Velazquez skillfully pushed Luster into second place just before entering the final stretch, taking the lead with a quarter-mile to go. Luster extended her lead by two lengths at the stretch call, finishing the race in a time of 2:02.01, which was just shy of the track record of 2:01.48 set by the 2022 Plate champion filly Moira.

Velazquez highlighted his thoughtful approach during the race, indicating he avoided getting trapped behind the leader. He praised Luster's responsiveness, noting how she fulfilled his requests seamlessly throughout the race.

Interestingly, Carroll had previously achieved her first Plate win with Edenwold from the same rail position, and last year's champion, Mansetti, also triumphed from the No. 1 post. Carroll expressed her ongoing anxiety until the final moment of the race, a common sentiment among trainers. However, she found solace in watching Velazquez handle Luster confidently throughout the race.

Part-owner Andrew Rosen shared that Carroll had confidently predicted their victory, emphasizing her remarkable preparation and training of Luster. "Last year, Josie told me we were going to be standing here," he said, commending her professional skills.

With two consecutive standout victories, Luster is generating excitement for the upcoming $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes scheduled for September 7 at Fort Erie Race Track. The anticipation is reminiscent of Wando's achievement in 2003, as he was the last horse to claim all three Canadian legs of the Triple Crown.

As for Luster's immediate future, Carroll refrained from confirming whether she would participate in the Prince of Wales Stakes, suggesting the connections would first take time to celebrate their current achievement.

With this latest win, Luster recorded her fifth victory in just six career starts, with her only other result being a third-place finish. The winner’s share, amounting to $600,000, has propelled her total earnings over the $1.093 million mark.

In the lead-up to the race, delays caused by a labour dispute between Great Canadian Casino and locked-out security personnel affected access to Woodbine, where alternative parking and shuttle plans were put in place for spectators.
