"Ohio Deputy Remembered After Fatal Traffic Incident"

CINCINNATI (AP) — An Ohio deputy sheriff killed by a driver accused of intentionally running him over was remembered Friday as a dedicated officer who regularly volunteered for the most dangerous assignments

CINCINNATI (AP) – Deputy Larry Ray Henderson Jr., an Ohio sheriff's deputy, was tragically killed by a driver accused of intentionally running him over. This incident occurred on May 2, graduation day, while Henderson was directing traffic near the University of Cincinnati. His death has sparked an outpouring of grief and remembrance from colleagues, community members, and public officials, highlighting his dedication to service and the risks he willingly took in his line of duty.

Henderson, 57, was commended during a memorial service held at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, which was attended by numerous police officers, the governor, and members of the community. Known for his commitment to law enforcement, he had served the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office for 37 years in various capacities, including corrections officer, patrol officer, and dive team supervisor. After his retirement in December, he continued to contribute as a special deputy while also serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Speakers at the memorial described Henderson as a selfless and dedicated public servant. His colleagues recalled his meticulous attention to the uniform he wore, his readiness to volunteer for the most dangerous assignments, and his sharp sense of humor that endeared him to many. Henderson was also known for his passion for nature and the outdoors, qualities that reflected both his personal interests and dedication to community service. He is survived by his wife and five children.

The tragedy unfolded when authorities accused 38-year-old Rodney Hinton Jr. of intentionally striking Henderson with his vehicle while he managed traffic flow. This shocking event occurred shortly after Hinton and his family viewed police body camera footage depicting the fatal shooting of his son, 18-year-old Ryan Hinton, by a Cincinnati police officer. Following the incident, Hinton Jr. was charged with aggravated murder in connection to Henderson's death. His attorney argued that Hinton Jr. was not in a sound state of mind at the time of the crash and entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

The police officer involved in the shooting of Ryan Hinton stated that the young man had pointed a gun at him. However, reports indicate that there was no evidence suggesting Ryan Hinton fired at the officers. Following the fatal confrontation, police discovered a semiautomatic handgun on Ryan Hinton, as well as a second firearm inside the car, with officers responding to a report of a stolen vehicle at the time.

The aftermath of these events has left a profound impact on both the law enforcement community and the public in Cincinnati. The inappropriate response and the tragedy of these incidents highlight the inherent dangers faced by officers in the line of duty and the complexities involved in law enforcement interactions. The loss of Deputy Henderson is being felt deeply across the community he served so diligently, as tributes continue to pour in that celebrate his life and commitment to safety.
