"Parade Preparations for Army's 250th Anniversary"

WASHINGTON (AP) — The tanks are staged and ready to roll

The highly anticipated military parade to celebrate the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary is set to take place on Saturday, June 14, 2025, coinciding with President Donald Trump's 79th birthday. Preparations for the event are in full swing, with over 6,000 troops on standby to march near the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Fencing and barriers have been erected, and protective metal plating has been laid down on the streets to ensure safety during the celebration.

However, one crucial factor remains uncertain: the weather. Rain is predicted, and there is a possibility of thunderstorms that could disrupt the parade. White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly has stated that the parade will proceed rain or shine, though there may be delays if lightning occurs. Regardless, Kelly emphasized that a historic celebration honoring military service members will take place.

The day-long festivities on the National Mall will feature various events, including NFL players, fitness competitions, and military displays, leading up to the parade estimated to cost between $25 million and $45 million. The Army expects approximately 200,000 attendees for this momentous occasion. A special area will be set up for President Trump to observe as each formation passes the White House.

During the parade, a total of 6,169 soldiers, along with 128 Army tanks, armored personnel carriers, and artillery, will demonstrate the Army's history, starting from the Battle of Lexington during the Revolutionary War to present-day conflicts. Each historical conflict will be represented by 150 troops in period costumes, followed by modern-day soldiers. Army planners have meticulously timed the parade to last exactly 90 minutes, optimizing troop formations to guest 7 across and 10 deep in order to meet the time constraints.

The procession will include a historical display of tanks, beginning with the First World War Renault tanks, which will mark their entry 8 minutes and 23 seconds into the parade. The first aircraft will soar overhead starting 13 minutes and 37 seconds into the event, featuring two B-25 Mitchell bombers, four P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft, and a famed C-47 Skytrain. This aircraft is noted for its pivotal role on D-Day when it helped drop thousands of paratroopers into France.

As the parade continues through the Gulf War, the war on terror, and modern conflicts, the Army will showcase contemporary vehicles such as the M1A2 Abrams tanks and new platforms like the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle and Stryker combat vehicle. Noteworthy will be the inclusion of six High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), which have proven valuable in recent military operations, particularly in Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia.

A significant air display will commence 48 minutes into the parade, featuring a procession of UH-60 Black Hawk, AH-64 Apache, and CH-47 Chinook helicopters, illustrating the evolution of Army air power.

The parade will culminate with a segment dedicated to the Army's future. Members from various military academies and new recruits will take part in this grand finale, wherein 250 new recruits or soldiers reenlisting will turn toward President Trump to take their oath of service. The event will conclude with a celebratory skydiving performance by the Army's Golden Knights parachute team, which will present Trump with an American flag. Following the parade, a 19-minute fireworks display and musical concert will add to the festivities, creating a memorable tribute to both the Army and the President's birthday.
