RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) – Authorities have arrested two individuals in connection with a hit-and-run incident during a "No Kings" protest over the weekend in Riverside, California. The crash took place on Saturday night and left a 21-year-old female demonstrator seriously injured. As of Tuesday, the Riverside Police Department reported that she remained hospitalized in critical condition.
Investigators revealed that a SUV veered towards marchers during the protest, striking the young woman. Following a public appeal for tips, police apprehended the suspected driver, a 58-year-old man from Riverside, on Monday. He is facing potential charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and hit-and-run causing injury.
In addition to the driver, a 39-year-old Riverside woman was also arrested for allegedly assisting in the concealment and destruction of evidence related to the crash. Her charges may include accessory after the fact and destruction of evidence.
The "No Kings" demonstrations, which spread across various cities nationwide, were organized in response to what participants claimed were the authoritarian tendencies of former President Donald Trump. While the protests largely consisted of peaceful marches, incidents of violence did occur in different locations. For instance, in Salt Lake City, a demonstrator was unintentionally shot and killed by a "safety volunteer" attempting to intervene with an alleged gunman.
Additionally, in Arizona, videos surfaced showing protestors engaged in a chaotic altercation with a masked individual who brandished a handgun, forcing the crowd to disperse. Arizona Department of Public Safety officers subsequently took the armed man into custody.
The events during the "No Kings" protests highlight the tensions present in various communities as citizens express their political discontent. Authorities are continuing their investigations into the hit-and-run incident and other violent occurrences that marred an otherwise significant display of civic engagement.
