In a remarkable turn of events, the landscapes of 12th-century England have been vividly brought to life in Simanovci, Serbia, where the filming of a new Robin Hood series has just concluded. This ambitious project features a 10-episode narrative exploring the legendary English outlaw, who is famously known for stealing from the rich to give to the poor. The series is produced by Lionsgate Television and is set to premiere later this year on MGM+ in the United States and select European locations.
During a recent visit to the film set in Simanovci, which is located close to Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, the intricate details of the scenography and costumes were evident. This thorough attention to research effectively transported both the cast and crew back to an era defined by the stone interiors of candlelit castles, featuring stained-glass lancet windows. The producers highlight that this "sweeping, romantic adventure" presents a historically grounded perspective on how Robin Hood grew into the legendary figure he is known as today, especially against the backdrop of the significant changes following the Norman conquest of England.
Jonathan English, the producer, director, and writer of the series, expressed enthusiasm for showcasing the origins of Robin Hood, stating that the story begins with him as a child. This narrative approach not only explores Robin's youthful experiences but also contextualizes his eventual transformation into an outlaw-turned-hero. English, a self-proclaimed fan of medieval history, emphasized that Robin Hood remains relevant across different cultures around the world, citing his recognition by people ranging from a pensioner in Belgrade to a teenager in Beijing.
When asked about the story's contemporary relevance, English argued it holds even more significance today than it did in previous decades. He pointed to themes of class disparity and the stark contrast between the wealthy elite and the general populace, which resonates deeply in today's social landscape characterized by exorbitantly wealthy individuals amid widespread economic challenges.
The plot also emphasizes the romantic chemistry between Robin and Marian. Robin is portrayed as the son of a Saxon forester, while Marian is the daughter of a Norman lord. Together, they rise above their societal divides to champion freedom and oppose injustice. Australian actor Jack Patten takes on the role of Robin, with Lauren McQueen portraying Marian. They are joined by notable actors such as Sean Bean, who plays the Sheriff of Nottingham, and Connie Nielsen as Eleanor of Aquitaine, the queen of England and wife to Henry II.
Patten admitted to feeling apprehensive about his role, as this marks his third project since graduating from drama school. He described his character of Robin Hood as a typical 24-year-old navigating the complexities of life while facing numerous challenges. McQueen stated that Marian's character is designed to be empowering for young women watching the series, reinforcing progressive themes.
Filmed across various locations in Serbia, the series employs hundreds of staff and crew members, marking it as a significant production even by Hollywood standards. Showrunner John Glenn noted that the series draws tonal inspiration from “Peaky Blinders,” a popular U.K. television series about gangsters in the 1920s, hinting at a grittier take on the legendary tale.
Both Glenn and English selected Serbia for this production due to its high-quality facilities and crew, as well as its breathtaking natural scenery that can resemble an ancient English landscape. English emphasized the challenge of finding untouched woodlands in England today, making Serbia an ideal location for the series’ historical setting.
