MONTREAL – A man has been arrested following an incident in which a vehicle crashed through the front door of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) headquarters in Westmount, a suburb of Montreal, on Saturday morning, August 2, 2025. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported inside the building during the incident, which occurred at approximately 8:25 a.m.
The suspect, identified as a 44-year-old man, was arrested shortly after the low-speed collision, which police have described as "deliberate" in nature. Despite the damage to the front entrance of the building, where two windows were broken, the crash was executed at a slow speed, with only the front of the vehicle making contact with the interior. According to Constable Jean-Pierre Brabant, the incident caused considerable damage but did not pose a significant risk to those inside.
Emergency services transported the suspect to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries following the crash. Investigators are awaiting the opportunity to speak with him as they gather information about the incident. Preliminary reports suggest that the man first approached the building on foot before returning with his vehicle, leading to the crash.
At the time of the incident, there were two RCMP officers present in the building; they were unharmed during the event. The RCMP headquarters in Westmount serves as the Quebec divisional headquarters for the federal police force and has been located on Dorchester Boulevard since its establishment in 1920.
In response to inquiries regarding the incident, the RCMP's Quebec division has referred all questions to the Montreal police. It's worth noting that this incident marks the second related occurrence at an RCMP office within the same week. Earlier in the week, on Monday, officers in Sherwood Park, Alberta, outside Edmonton, were involved in a shooting incident in the parking lot of the Strathcona detachment, where they shot an individual who was allegedly brandishing a firearm. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is currently investigating that shooting.
This incident at the RCMP headquarters highlights concerns surrounding mental health and public safety. The authorities have confirmed that mental health issues may have played a role in the suspect's actions, and they have stated that terrorism is not a factor in this case.
The situation continues to develop as investigators work to piece together the events leading up to the crash and examine the motive behind the suspect's actions. The priority remains the safety of the public and the well-being of those involved.
