MILAN (AP) The fashion world gathered in Milan on Saturday to bid farewell to the iconic designer Giorgio Armani, who passed away at the age of 91 at his home in central Milan. The citys mayor, Giuseppe Sala, described Armani as a man of extraordinary elegance whose impact resonated not only in Milan but across the global fashion landscape. His death was a significant loss felt widely among admirers and colleagues alike.
Armani's passing occurred on Thursday, and he was surrounded by loved ones during his final moments. Even in his last days, he was dedicated to his craft, with one of his final projects being a runway show to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his signature Giorgio Armani brand, scheduled to cap off Milan Fashion Week later this month.
Mourners from various walks of life, including celebrities and ordinary fans, filled the Armani Theater to pay their respects. The venue was adorned with rows of flickering candles and featured soft piano music by Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi, creating a deeply reflective atmosphere. The closed coffin was surrounded by carabinieri honor guards dressed in ceremonial attire and decorated with a bouquet of long-stem white roses.
Among the notable attendees was famed designer Donatella Versace, who honored Armani with a bouquet of white flowers before leaving the scene quietly. A striking sculpture featuring a crucifix on a raw block of marble, taken from Armani's bedside, added to the somber tribute.
Although Armani was known for his private nature and was not publicly recognized as a practicing Catholic, a priest emerging from his residence mentioned to reporters that he attended Mass daily. Mayor Sala was one of the first to arrive at the viewing, offering condolences to Leo Dell’Orco, Armani's longtime collaborator and head of menswear. Sala relayed a poignant memory of a supportive phone call he received from Armani during a corruption scandal in Milan, emphasizing the designer's steadfast friendship.
Among the mourners was Annamaria Longo Dorni, who traveled over two hours from Lago Maggiore to pay tribute, wearing an Armani midnight blue jacket. She expressed her admiration for the designer, stating, You put it on, and you’re perfect. It’s always up to date, even after 20 years.
As the public viewing progressed, the line of attendees extended down the block, reflecting the deep affection and respect held for the fashion maestro. This public tribute will continue through Sunday, culminating in a private funeral, the details of which remain confidential.
Milan is home to a multitude of Armani landmarks, including the Armani Theater and the Armani/Silos museum, an exhibition space situated in the city’s design district. Additionally, his iconic residence, historic offices, flagship stores, and hotel contribute to the city's vibrant connection to his legacy.
