"Sanders Backs Mamdani at Brooklyn Town Hall Rally"

NEW YORK (AP) — U

On Saturday, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders joined New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani for a town hall meeting in Brooklyn. The event aimed to galvanize support for Mamdani's progressive vision as he approaches the conclusion of the city's mayoral race, which will take place on November 6, 2025. Both Sanders and Mamdani directed sharp criticisms at former President Donald Trump while rallying their supporters around core progressive values.

The atmosphere in the auditorium was highly favorable for Mamdani, with loud cheers meted out in response to strong advocacy for health care as a human right. Conversely, mentions of Trump elicited heavy boos, showcasing the audience's sentiments. Notably, when Mamdani invoked his campaign’s slogans, the crowd eagerly participated by chanting “Rent!” when asked about freezing rent and “Free!” when asked about making buses faster.

This town hall was part of Sanders's “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, which has garnered large crowds across both Republican and Democratic states. With his campaign gaining momentum, Mamdani faces significant competition from former Governor Andrew Cuomo and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, both of whom are running independently, alongside Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, the founder of the Guardian Angels crime patrol group.

During his address, Sanders hailed Mamdani as “the future of the Democratic Party,” simultaneously criticizing prominent New York Democrats for not backing Mamdani's candidacy. "I find it hard to understand how the major Democratic leaders in New York state are not supporting the Democratic candidate," said Sanders, highlighting the challenges Mamdani faces in rallying institutional support.

The town hall provided a striking contrast to the often contentious nature of political events, feeling more like a celebratory gathering. Despite this, it occurred amid a turbulent week in the election. Mayor Adams had to fend off allegations regarding Trump's representatives reportedly gauging his willingness to withdraw from the race to accept a federal job. Meanwhile, Trump expressed his view that Mamdani, a democratic socialist, should not win as mayor, suggesting that Mamdani can only succeed if at least two out of the three other major candidates exit the race. Trump articulated a belief that Cuomo might perform better in a head-to-head contest.

Among the attendees, 75-year-old Edward Donlon remarked on the outrageousness of presidential interference in local elections. A retired attorney who traveled from Staten Island, he emphasized his desire for an honest politician, reinforcing the sentiment that authenticity is paramount in political leadership.

The event unfolded with mostly favorable interactions, although a moment of chaos occurred when a man, adorned in a shirt with a Cuban flag and yelling accusations of communism, was escorted out by security. Mamdani effortlessly addressed the disruption, remarking, “You know that something has changed when it’s not enough to call us democratic socialists anymore,” displaying his ability to engage with challenging moments during the town hall.

As Mamdani rallies support and momentum ahead of the election, his alliance with Sanders not only amplifies his progressive message but also highlights the growing energy among young voters who align with their shared vision for the future of governance in New York City.
