Canadian Soldier Found Dead in Latvia Deployment

A Canadian Armed Forces member deployed to Latvia, who was missing since earlier this week, was found dead Friday

A member of the Canadian Armed Forces deployed to Latvia, Warrant Officer George Hohl, was found dead on Friday after being reported missing earlier in the week. Hohl, a vehicle technician from Edmonton, was participating in Operation Reassurance as part of the Aviation Battalion under the NATO Multinational Brigade-Latvia. He had dedicated nearly 20 years of service to the Canadian Armed Forces.

The Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces issued a news release confirming Hohl's death. They stated that the Canadian Forces Military Police, with assistance from Latvian authorities, are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. However, the release noted that there is no indication the incident poses any increased threat to the safety and security of Canadians deployed in the region.

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed deep sadness upon learning of Hohl's death. In a social media post, he reflected on his recent visit to the brigade to which Hohl belonged, emphasizing the honor he felt to spend time with them. Carney offered his condolences on behalf of all Canadians to Hohl's family, friends, and comrades.

General Jennie Carignan, the Chief of the Defence Staff, also paid tribute to Hohl, highlighting his many years of dedicated service and the impact he had during his time in the military.

This incident underscores the risks faced by military personnel deployed abroad and the importance of supporting those who serve. The focus now remains on honoring Hohl's legacy and ensuring a thorough investigation into his untimely death.
