TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) – On Thursday, Taiwan experienced continued heavy rainfall from a tropical depression that has led to significant flooding and an ongoing risk of landslides throughout various regions of the island. The storm made landfall in Pingtung County, located in southern Taiwan, on Wednesday evening, leading to a total of 95 reported injuries across the island.
As the storm, named Fung-wong, approached, authorities took proactive measures, evacuating over 8,500 residents from vulnerable coastal and mountainous areas. The tropical depression recorded sustained winds of 54 kph (34 mph) near its center, with even stronger gusts expected in certain areas on Thursday.
One of the hardest-hit areas has been the city of Yilan, situated along the northern coastline, where rainfall has exceeded 1.065 meters (42 inches) since the beginning of the week. Weather officials have forecasted that heavy rain will persist near the northeastern port city of Keelung and in the capital city of Taipei. Due to the hazardous weather conditions, authorities have issued warnings regarding the possibility of flooding and landslides, particularly in mountainous regions. Residents have also been advised to exercise caution regarding flying debris or loose objects potentially falling from buildings.
Following two days of closures in some regions, schools and offices across the island reopened, signaling a return to normalcy for many. However, the impact of Fung-wong remains significant, particularly in Mingli Village, located in eastern Hualien County, where severe flooding occurred as a result of an overflowing creek. This resulted in a portion of a major highway being closed after flooding rendered it impassable.
Fung-wong initially struck the Philippines as a powerful super typhoon, causing severe floods and landslides, resulting in at least 27 fatalities. As it approached Taiwan, however, the storm diminished in speed and strength, leading to the rain and flooding currently affecting residents.
As the situation continues to develop, local authorities are monitoring conditions closely in an effort to mitigate risks to public safety. Efforts to complete evacuations and provide support to those impacted by the flooding are ongoing, as the community grapples with the aftermath of both the tropical depression and the damage it has caused.
