BANJUL, Gambia (AP) – A tragic maritime accident unfolded recently off the coast of Gambia, as a boat carrying over 200 migrants capsized while attempting to reach Europe. Gambian President Adama Barrow confirmed on Friday evening that dozens of individuals remain missing following the incident, which occurred on New Year's Eve in the North Bank region. The accident triggered an urgent search and rescue effort involving local authorities, emergency services, and volunteers from nearby fishing communities.
As per the reports, at least 102 survivors have been successfully rescued, and seven bodies have been recovered so far. The rescue mission is focused in the vicinity of the village of Jinack, where the boat found itself in distress. President Barrow emphasized the collaborative efforts of emergency personnel, local fishermen, and volunteers, highlighting their commitment to providing assistance to victims and aiding ongoing search efforts.
This incident sheds light on the perilous journey many African migrants undertake in search of better opportunities in Europe. The Atlantic coast remains one of the deadliest routes for such crossings, stretches that encompass Gambia, Senegal, and Mauritania. Many migrants aspire to reach Spain via the Canary Islands, but the high risks involved, particularly the risk of capsizing, result in numerous tragic events. In August 2025, a similar incident resulted in around 150 individuals being either dead or missing, as their boat, originating from Gambia, sank near the Mauritanian coast. Earlier, in July 2024, another tragic incident claimed the lives of more than a dozen migrants, with 150 others reported missing after another capsizing.
The circumstances leading to the latest tragedy are still under investigation, with Gambia’s Ministry of Defense reporting that the ill-fated boat was found "grounded on a sandbank." In light of this incident, President Barrow announced that the national emergency response plan has been activated, and adequate resources have been deployed to intensify search efforts and to assist the survivors in need of medical care.
During his address, President Barrow extended his condolences to the families affected by this calamity. He described the incident as a “painful reminder” of the risks associated with irregular migration. Moreover, he vowed that a thorough investigation would be conducted into the tragedy, emphasizing the government’s commitment to fortifying measures that would prevent such irregular migratory movements in the future.
Barrow underscored the necessity of creating “safer and more dignified opportunities” for young individuals in Gambia, emphasizing the government’s determination to address the root causes that drive migration. The commitment to providing a better future for the youth aims to alleviate the need for perilous sea journeys that could potentially end in tragedy.
