CHITWAN, Nepal (AP) — In the landscape of Nepal’s political scene, few candidates have generated as much excitement as Balendra Shah, a Millennial former rapper, who is competing for the position of prime minister in a significant election taking place on Thursday. Shah made headlines when he won the 2022 mayoral election in Kathmandu, overthrowing candidates from well-established political parties. His rise coincided with a youth-led movement in September, which played a pivotal role in ousting the then-government in the nation of approximately 30 million people.
At 35 years of age, Shah’s supporters view him as a potential front-runner for the prime ministerial role. He previously held the position of mayor until January before stepping down to chase higher political ambitions under the banner of his National Independent Party. This party has carved out its identity as an alternative to the two leading candidates who represent Nepal’s dominant political factions.
The candidates Shah faces include Gagan Thapa, the leader of the Nepali Congress party, who has committed to combating corruption and enhancing government accountability. On the other side, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) is helmed by former Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli, who advocates for maintaining policy continuity and political stability in the country.
However, criticism surrounds Shah, with detractors labeling him a populist and questioning whether his youth-oriented appeal can effectively translate into governance. Critics point to his limited political experience, with most of his background confined to his term as mayor, where he faced backlash for controversial actions, such as the demolition of homes without adequate planning. “While he was the mayor of Kathmandu, he was cruel to the poor people on the streets who were just trying to live day to day,” lamented Kathmandu resident Loken Upadhaya.
Prior to entering the world of politics, Balendra Shah gained modest recognition as a rap artist, channeling his music to address social issues and engage with political themes. Supporters view him as a refreshing departure from Nepal's entrenched political elite. “I have seen so many politicians come and go, but I love his energy and I am hopeful that he will bring some change,” expressed supporter Tulasi Devi Shrestha.
Shah's election campaign has drawn significant attention, particularly from the younger demographic, showcasing a distinct break from traditional political contenders in Nepal. His journey from a cultural figure in the music industry to a political candidate represents a broader shift in Nepali politics, characterized by increased youth participation and a quest for change amid longstanding political stagnation.
