Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is currently hospitalized in the intensive care unit due to pneumonia, according to a statement from DF Star Hospital in Brasilia. Bolsonaro, 70, was transferred from prison to the hospital after experiencing symptoms such as chills and vomiting. His eldest son, Flávio Bolsonaro, made the announcement on the social media platform X, urging followers to pray for his father's health and hope that the situation is not serious.
Earlier reports indicated that Bolsonaro woke up feeling unwell, displaying high fever, low oxygen levels, sweating, and chills. Medical examinations confirmed that he is suffering from bronchopneumonia, likely caused by aspiration. As part of his treatment, the hospital has him on intravenous antibiotics and non-invasive clinical support.
Since being stabbed during a campaign event in 2018, Bolsonaro has faced multiple health issues and hospitalizations. In January 2023, he was taken to the same hospital for brain tests following a fall from his bed. His recent health complications come as he is serving a 27-year prison sentence for a failed coup attempt, which was adjudicated by a panel of Supreme Court justices last year.
In September 2022, Bolsonaro and several associates were convicted of trying to undermine Brazil's democratic system after his electoral defeat. This included plans to eliminate key political figures such as current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Vice President Geraldo Alckmin. Moreover, investigators uncovered schemes that encouraged insurrection attempts in early 2023.
Despite being convicted, Bolsonaro has continually denied any wrongdoing related to the accusations, which include leading an armed criminal organization and attempting to violently abolish the democratic rule of law. As he navigates these legal battles and health issues, this vocal former president remains a significant figure in Brazilian politics, with reports suggesting he plans to run for office again this year.
The current polling indicates a close race between Bolsonaro and Lula for the upcoming presidential elections, reflecting ongoing divisions within the Brazilian political landscape. Thus, Bolsonaro's health status is not only a personal concern but also holds potential implications for the future of the country's political dynamics.
