VERIA, Greece (AP) — Every spring, the plains of Greece's largest peach-producing region bloom with vibrant pink blossoms, inviting visitors from across Greece and increasingly from other European countries. This breathtaking spectacle attracts many who wish to witness the peach trees in full bloom, a phenomenon described by Gianna Pilitsidou, president of the Veria Tourism Club, as a sight everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.

The plain, which spans approximately 170 square kilometers (about 65 square miles), transforms into a stunning pink landscape. Over recent years, the Veria Tourism Club has organized numerous events in the peach orchards to celebrate the blossoming season, including photography activities, cycling tours, and the showcasing of local farmers' products. Pilitsidou emphasized the club's dedication to welcoming spring with enthusiasm by inviting people to visit and enjoy the beautiful orchards.

During two weekends, thousands of visitors explored the blooming peach trees around Veria, located 72 kilometers (45 miles) west of Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city. Wesley van Eijk, a travel blogger from the Netherlands, expressed his desire for people from Holland and Belgium to discover the lesser-known yet incredible spots like Veria. He highlighted the importance of experiencing the place firsthand, noting that its popularity is on the rise.

The events not only serve to promote tourism in the region but also aim to support local farmers involved in peach production. Anastasios Chalkidis, president of the local farmers' union, spoke about the hard work invested by farmers to facilitate these events, expressing gratitude for the positive promotion of their cherished product. The increased number of visitors has been beneficial for the local economy, as hotel staff reported a noticeable rise in guests during the event period.

Travelers from various countries, including Germany, have made the journey to participate in this unique event. Andrea Lachnit, a visitor from Germany, praised the peach blossom experience as stunning, beautiful, and heavenly, claiming she had never witnessed anything like it before. The peach trees in the Veria region typically bloom between mid-March and mid-April, making this a crucial time for tourism and local agriculture.

The celebration of the peach blossoms is not just a testament to the beauty of nature but also highlights the cultural and economic significance of peach farming in the region. The blossoming period fosters community involvement and creates a vibrant atmosphere centered around nature, tourism, and agriculture. The blossoming peach trees serve as a reminder of the region's rich agricultural heritage, and the events aimed at promoting the festivities have proven successful in drawing in visitors and enhancing local pride.

As spring approaches each year, the anticipation for the bloom of the peach trees in Veria continues to grow, symbolizing the intersection of nature's beauty and the hard work of the community. The annual celebration serves as a powerful means of attracting tourists and spotlighting the agricultural richness that the Veria region has to offer.
