PARIS (AP) French authorities have successfully prevented a potential bomb attack outside a Bank of America building located in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, drawing immediate police attention to two suspects who were observed carrying a shopping bag near the bank's premises. One of the suspects reportedly had a lighter and was attempting to ignite a device, while the other managed to evade capture.
The national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office, known as PNAT, has since initiated an investigation into the matter, focusing on alleged terrorism-related offenses. The charges under consideration include attempted damage by fire or other dangerous means, as well as the manufacture, possession, and transportation of incendiary or explosive devices with the intent to cause harm. Additionally, involvement in a terrorist criminal organization is part of the ongoing investigation.
A police source indicated that one of the suspects was taken into custody following the thwarted attack. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez praised the rapid intervention of a specialized unit from the Paris police, highlighting their effectiveness in preventing what could have been a violent act of terrorism. "Vigilance remains at a very high level," Nuñez stated, commending the security and intelligence forces for their full mobilization in light of the current international climate.
Nuñez's comments come against a backdrop of heightened security measures in France, particularly since the onset of the Iran war. Authorities have augmented personal protection for individuals associated with the Iranian opposition and have intensified security around locations that may be at risk, particularly those connected to U.S. interests and the Jewish community.
Radio RTL, which reported the details of the incident, noted that law enforcement agencies have been particularly vigilant given the increasing threats present in today's global context. As investigations continue, the Paris police prefecture has opted not to comment further on the case.
The swift response by law enforcement officials underscores France's ongoing commitment to combatting terrorism and ensuring public safety. As investigations proceed, the gravity of the situation remains clear, with both local and international implications tied to the incidents involving the potential bombing attempt in Paris.
