The Halifax Regional Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has charged three drivers within a week for stunting in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). These incidents highlight the critical issue of reckless driving and the enforcement measures taken by local law enforcement to ensure road safety.
The first incident occurred on the evening of April 18, 2023, when officers observed a Ford Mustang traveling at a speed of 113 km/h in a 60 km/h zone in Windsor Junction. According to the police report, the 60-year-old male driver from Lower Sackville displayed signs of impairment during the traffic stop. Following standard procedure, officers administered a roadside breath sample, which resulted in a “warn.” The driver was subsequently issued a ticket for stunting, which is a serious offense involving excessive speeding. Additionally, he faced a seven-day license suspension and had his vehicle seized. Due to the outcomes of the breath sample, the driver received an additional seven-day suspension of his license.
The same evening, another officer operating on Highway 107 near Lake Echo detected a Kia Forte traveling at an alarming speed of 150 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. Like the previous case, authorities reported that the 45-year-old driver from Dartmouth also exhibited signs of impairment during the traffic stop. Following similar protocol, this driver was subjected to a roadside breath sample, which again resulted in a “warn.” He too was ticketed for stunting, received a seven-day license suspension, and had his vehicle seized. Furthermore, he faced an additional seven-day suspension stemming from the results of his breath test.
The final incident happened on the Friday night following these two events, where an officer on Highway 107 near Lake Echo stopped a Mazda CX-30 that was recorded traveling at a speed of 162 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. The 32-year-old male driver from Lake Echo was charged with stunting as well. Similar to the previous cases, he faced immediate consequences including a seven-day license suspension and seizure of his vehicle.
In all three recorded incidents, the penalties included a ticket for stunting, which came with a substantial fine of $2,422.50. These enforcement actions reflect a strict zero-tolerance policy toward reckless driving in the Halifax Regional Municipality and underscore the ongoing efforts by the RCMP to enhance road safety. The trends evident in these incidents demonstrate the need for continued vigilance both from law enforcement and the public to prevent such dangerous behaviors on the road.
