U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in India on May 23, 2026, marking his first official visit to the country. His arrival comes a few days ahead of a significant meeting with foreign ministers from India, Australia, and Japan, who are members of the Indo-Pacific strategic alliance known as the Quad. This meeting reflects Washington's commitment to bolster its relations with New Delhi after previous tensions that arose due to former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, which increased duties on several Indian exports.
Rubio's four-day trip aims to strengthen ties with India, a country described as a vital ally and partner. Before the crucial Quad ministerial meeting, Rubio will engage in a multi-city tour, including a gala reception in New Delhi that commemorates the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. He stated, “There’s a lot to work on with India, they’re a great ally and partner. We do a lot of good work with them so this is an important trip.”
Upon his arrival, Rubio visited Kolkata early Saturday, where he is set to attend Mother House, the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa. This visit highlights both cultural and humanitarian aspects of his itinerary. In the following days, he is slated to visit iconic Northern cities such as Agra, known for the Taj Mahal, and Jaipur, recognized for its historic palaces.
In New Delhi, Rubio is planned to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as hold a bilateral discussion with India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on May 24. The U.S. Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, mentioned in a social media post that various topics including trade, technology, defense, and the Quad will be on the agenda during these discussions, reflecting the multifaceted nature of U.S.-India relations.
On May 26, Rubio will participate in the Quad ministerial meeting in New Delhi, where the alliance has consistently voiced concerns regarding China’s military assertiveness in the South China Sea and its aggressive maritime territorial claims. In contrast, Beijing defends its military activities as defensive measures meant to uphold its sovereign rights, characterizing the Quad as a strategy aimed at containing its economic growth and influence in the region.
Since his inauguration as Secretary of State in January 2026, Rubio's engagement with the Quad nations has been a priority, and this visit underscores the significance of multilateral cooperation in addressing regional challenges. His diplomatic activities in India are seen as part of a broader effort to reinforce collaborative ties among democratic nations in the Indo-Pacific region.
