"Ukraine Seeks Gripen Jets in Defense Talks with Sweden"

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was in Sweden on Thursday for talks with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on bilateral defense cooperation, the Ukrainian leader and the Swedish government said

On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Sweden to engage in discussions with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson regarding bilateral defense cooperation. Both leaders confirmed that they are in the process of preparing "a major defense package," which includes plans for Sweden to supply Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine.

Zelenskyy has been actively seeking to enhance defense collaborations with various countries by showcasing Ukraine's drone expertise, developed over more than four years of conflict against Russia's invasion. He emphasized that Ukrainian specialists have not only assisted countries in the Middle East, specifically the Gulf Arab region, in bolstering their air defenses amid ongoing tensions linked to the Iran conflict, but have also contributed at American military bases in the region. Furthermore, Ukraine has initiated joint drone production agreements with European Union nations, highlighting concerns over Russian President Vladimir Putin's military ambitions beyond Ukraine.

Ukrainian drones, which operate along a 1,250-kilometer (780-mile) front line, have effectively targeted Russian supply routes while countering the larger Russian military force. The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, noted that Ukraine's effective mid-range and front-line drone strike campaigns have restricted Russia's capacity to transport troops and sustain positions along the front line.

Currently, Russia occupies around 20% of Ukrainian territory, including the Crimean Peninsula, which was annexed in 2014. The human cost of this conflict has been significant, with estimates from the head of the UK's GCHQ intelligence agency indicating that nearly half a million Russian soldiers have died since the onset of hostilities.

Despite significant losses, Russia maintains an advantage in long-range ballistic missiles, which it has used extensively throughout the conflict to inflict damage on Ukraine's power infrastructure and attack urban centers. Recently, Russian forces launched nearly 90 missiles, along with hundreds of drones, targeting Kyiv in an attempt to overwhelm the city's air defenses, as part of their escalating campaign against civilian areas.

In response, Zelenskyy has reached out to U.S. President Joe Biden and Congress, requesting increased supplies of American-made air defense ammunition to counter the threat posed by Russian ballistic missiles. In his communication, he specifically called for more U.S. Patriot PAC-3 missiles and noted that deliveries to Ukraine are dangerously low due to ongoing logistical challenges stemming from the Iran conflict, which has diverted U.S. military stocks.

As the situation develops, the Ukrainian capital is preparing for further significant bombardments. However, it has been reported that no foreign diplomats have yet followed Moscow's advisories to evacuate Kyiv, despite warnings from the Russian Foreign Ministry about potential "systemic strikes" on the city.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry confirmed on Thursday that all diplomatic missions in Kyiv continue to operate, illustrating the resilience and steadfastness of Ukraine amid ongoing military threats.
