BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A Russian drone, part of an overnight assault on Ukraine, crashed into an apartment building in eastern Romania on Friday, injuring two individuals, according to Romanian authorities. The incident has raised significant security concerns within NATO member Romania, prompting a request from the Romanian Foreign Ministry for a quicker transfer of anti-drone capabilities, citing the drone's flight as a serious breach of international law.
The drone, which was detected by radar in Romanian airspace, crashed onto the roof of a building in Galati, a city situated on the Danube River and close to the borders of Moldova and Ukraine. Following the impact, a fire ensued, leading to the evacuation of several residents. Fortunately, the two individuals who were injured sustained only minor injuries, as reported by Romania's Defense Ministry.
In response to the incident, the Romanian military deployed two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter, which were authorized to engage any potential threats. Alert messages were also sent to residents in the affected areas to ensure their safety. This incident highlights escalating tensions in the region, as Russia continues to employ long-range ballistic missiles and drones to target Ukraine's infrastructure, including its power grid.
As the situation unfolds, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated his country's urgent need for increased military support from the United States, particularly in the form of Patriot air defense missiles capable of countering Russian assaults. During a recent visit to Sweden, Zelenskyy noted that aid deliveries to Ukraine are significantly lagging, especially in light of the ongoing conflict in Iran that is straining U.S. military resources. He urged U.S. officials to act more swiftly in providing support, asserting, “I believe (the U.S.) must act quicker. We are being very persistent.”
In an alarming development, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres addressed the U.N. Security Council, warning that the intensification of military attacks poses an escalating risk of out-of-control consequences. He emphasized that the first four months of this year have seen a higher civilian death toll than during the same time period over the past three years. Guterres called for increased diplomatic efforts, immediate de-escalation, and a “full and unconditional ceasefire” to prevent further loss of life.
The escalation of military hostilities and the use of drones and missiles have raised the stakes in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, prompting neighboring nations to reassess their security frameworks. Romania's demand for enhanced anti-drone capabilities presents a critical point of focus for NATO as it navigates the complexities of the ongoing conflict and its implications for regional stability.
