In southern Lebanon, Israel’s air force and artillery have launched strikes near the Beaufort Castle, a Crusader-built structure, as clashes intensified in villages close to the city of Nabatieh on Saturday. The Israeli military has issued evacuation warnings for over a dozen villages in the region following recent direct talks between Lebanese and Israeli officials, which took place for the first time in decades at the Pentagon.
The situation was a focal point during a meeting between Lebanon’s President and Prime Minister, who subsequently vowed to enhance their diplomatic efforts to halt Israeli demolition activities targeting homes and historical sites. The discussions reflect the growing tensions in southern Lebanon, particularly concerning Israel's military operations and evacuation alerts.
Reports from Lebanon’s National News Agency indicated that Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling occurred near the historically significant Beaufort Castle, located approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the Israeli border. The castle, which overlooks extensive areas of southern Lebanon, was under Israeli control for 18 years until their withdrawal from Lebanon in May 2000.
Israeli forces have been making advances in surrounding villages, including Yohmor and Zawtar al-Sharqieh, after crossing the strategically significant Litani River. Despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire established on April 17, large sections of southern Lebanon remain under Israeli military control, leading to ongoing military exchanges with Hezbollah.
Recent airstrikes have resulted in casualties, including three deaths from strikes in the village of Ansar and injuries to Lebanese soldiers due to a drone attack linking Ebba to Nabatieh. Hezbollah retaliated by firing rockets at northern Israel’s largest city, Kiryat Shmona, and later targeting the city of Safed, citing the need to respond to airstrikes that claimed civilian lives in Lebanon.
Notably, the airstrikes included an incident in which an Israeli attack killed a Syrian family—Qais al-Bakir, his pregnant wife, and their six children—after they had fled the Syrian civil war. Their deaths reportedly occurred in the village of Adloun, leading to widespread grief among their relatives as they mourned the loss of a family striving for a peaceful life amid ongoing conflict.
The current conflict between Israel and Hezbollah reignited on March 2, following a series of escalating tensions that began when Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel. Since the outbreak of hostilities, over 3,350 people have lost their lives in Lebanon, while more than one million have been displaced due to the ongoing violence.
In parallel, Israeli military actions have continued in the Gaza Strip, where a Palestinian nurse, Jamal Abu Aoun, was killed in a recent airstrike, the latest in a series of casualties following a tenuous ceasefire attempt in October. His death was reported after strikes hit a Hamas-operated police point in Deir al-Balah, highlighting the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the ongoing violence in the region.
Despite the cessation of major fighting, Israeli military actions have persisted almost daily, with airstrikes targeting areas in Gaza, resulting in numerous Palestinian casualties. As the conflict continues, the situation in both Lebanon and Gaza remains precarious, marked by retaliatory strikes and civilian suffering exacerbated by the extended military hostilities.
