LONDON (AP) - Influencer brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate were arrested on Saturday in Miami after U.K. prosecutors announced new rape and sex trafficking charges against them. The charges were detailed by Britain's Crown Prosecution Service and involve four additional victims, following evidence obtained from Bedfordshire Police in southeastern England. The allegations against the brothers include rape, assault, trafficking, and offenses related to "indecent images of a child and extreme pornography."
With these latest charges, the total number of alleged victims in the U.K. has risen to seven, marking a significant development in an ongoing international legal saga that has engaged authorities across the U.S., Britain, and Romania. Both brothers have consistently denied any wrongdoing.
Who the Tate Brothers are
Andrew Tate, 39, and Tristan Tate, 38, are dual U.S.-British citizens who have built a controversial social media presence focused on themes of wealth, male superiority, and misogyny. Andrew Tate, a former professional kickboxer and self-identified misogynist, boasts over 10 million followers on the platform X, primarily among boys and young men. His controversial views have led to bans from multiple platforms, including YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, for violating hate speech guidelines. He operates an online academy where he claims to teach young men how to achieve financial success and attract women. Tristan Tate also shares a background as a former kickboxer.
The Tate brothers are known supporters of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
What the Tates are charged with
The Tates have faced an array of charges in both the U.K. and Romania since relocating to Romania in 2016. According to the British prosecutors, the latest charges pertain to alleged offenses occurring between 2010 and 2017. Specifically, Andrew Tate has been charged with seven counts of rape, three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, three counts of assault, and 19 charges concerning indecent images and extreme pornography. Tristan Tate faces one count of sexual assault, two counts of rape, and three counts of arranging or facilitating sex trafficking.
The Crown Prosecution Service has officially requested the extradition of the Tates from the U.S., where they are currently detained, as they await the commencement of extradition proceedings to the U.K. Additionally, the Tates are already facing previous charges of rape, bodily harm, human trafficking, and controlling prostitution related to three other alleged victims in the U.K. between 2012 and 2015.
In June, an attempt by the Tates to obtain the names of their accusers was dismissed by a U.K. High Court judge.
In Romania, both brothers, along with two Romanian women, were arrested in late 2022 on allegations of luring women for sexual exploitation. They have denied these accusations, and legal complexities have since stalled the progress of their case in Romania, although it remains active, alongside a separate legal matter in the country.
Andrew Tate has frequently asserted that prosecutors in Romania lack substantial evidence against him, claiming that he is a target of a political conspiracy aimed at silencing him.
Why the Tates were in the U.S.
British authorities previously sought the extradition of the Tates from Romania once their legal challenges there were resolved. In February 2025, the Tates were allowed to leave Romania following the removal of travel restrictions, subsequently traveling to Florida on a private jet. This movement attracted attention, with Romania’s foreign minister noting that a U.S. official during the Trump administration had shown interest in the Tates’ legal situation in Romania. When questioned about the matter, Trump claimed to have had no prior knowledge of the case or its details.
