"Mike Myers Honored at Historic Canadian Screen Awards"

Comedian Mike Myers and “Heated Rivalry” stars Hudson Williams and Sophie Nélisse are among those expected at the Canadian Screen Awards tonight

The Canadian Screen Awards ceremony, a premier event celebrating Canadian television and film, is set to take place tonight, featuring renowned comedian Mike Myers among its distinguished guests. Myers, famous for his work on "Saturday Night Live" and iconic films like "Austin Powers" and "Wayne's World," will receive the prestigious Icon Award in recognition of his significant contributions to the entertainment industry both in Canada and internationally.

Highlighting a commitment to showcasing Canadian culture, this year's ceremony is notable for being the first to be broadcast across multiple networks, including CBC, CTV, and Global, as well as their respective streaming platforms. This initiative coincides with what has been termed the "elbows up" movement, which Myers popularized as a retort to U.S. President Donald Trump's provocative remarks concerning Canada and its sovereignty.

The hit series "Heated Rivalry," which has captivated audiences with its provocative narrative of romance between hockey players, is among the nominees, having already secured 13 out of 18 nominations at the prior gala for scripted television. The series stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie, and will contend for awards including Best Drama Series and Best Lead Performer at tonight's event. Williams faces tough competition in the lead performer category, including his co-star François Arnaud, Kathleen Munroe from "Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent," Allan Hawco from "Saint-Pierre," and last year’s winner Supinder Wraich from "Allegiance."

Jacob Tierney, the creative mind behind "Heated Rivalry," is having a banner year at the awards, having already won multiple honors including Best Direction and Best Writing for his work on the show. His other project, "The Traitors Canada," won Best Reality/Competition Series just before the main ceremony, demonstrating his versatility and impact on Canadian television.

Additionally, Sophie Nélisse, another notable star of "Heated Rivalry," will be honored with this year’s Radius Award, which acknowledges individuals whose international work enhances Canada’s global image. Nélisse, who plays Williams' on-screen love interest, will also participate as a presenter during the ceremony.

The 2026 event will see a variety of presenters, including Shamier Anderson, Dave Foley, Lauren Ash, and Mae Martin, the latter of whom is also set to receive the Gordon Sinclair Award for Broadcast Journalism, acknowledging her remarkable contributions to sports media in Canada.

The hosting of this year's broadcast will be undertaken by Andrew Phung, recognized for his previous Screen Award-winning performances in "Kim's Convenience" and "Run the Burbs." Phung expressed his excitement and nerves about presenting, especially given the presence of comedy legend Myers in the audience, making for a potentially memorable experience.

Competing for the title of Best Comedy Series is "North of North," which leads the nominations with 20 in total. The sitcom is vying for awards alongside strong contenders such as "Small Achievable Goals," which is concluded as it won’t be renewed by CBC after this season. "North of North" has already celebrated seven wins, including honors for Best Writing and Best Ensemble Performance in a Comedy, positioning it as a notable success of the ceremony.

On the film front, R.T. Thorne’s "40 Acres" has garnered acclaim, sweeping nine trophies already and aiming for Best Motion Picture tonight. The film’s compelling storyline follows a Black-Indigenous family in a post-apocalyptic setting, showcasing the challenges they face against a group of cannibals, and stands as a testament to the hard work and creativity needed to produce independent films in Canada.

The Canadian Screen Awards will be broadcast live on Sunday evening, allowing viewers to witness the recognition of exceptional talent and contributions within the Canadian entertainment landscape as it continues to flourish.
