"Unveiling Sable Island's Resilient Wild Horses"

HALIFAX — A Nova Scotian zoologist and photographer says he hopes his upcoming book on Sable Island’s wild horses will help people appreciate the rugged beauty and adaptability of the isolated animals

HALIFAX — A Nova Scotian zoologist and photographer, Damian Lidgard, is set to release a new book titled “Sable Untamed: The Wild Beauty of Sable Island’s Horses.” His objective with this publication is to foster a greater appreciation for the rugged beauty and remarkable adaptability of the isolated wild horses of Sable Island.

Sable Island is a unique 42-kilometre-long sandbar located approximately 290 kilometres southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia. For nearly 30 years, Lidgard has dedicated his time to researching the seal population on the island, during which he has also developed a keen interest in the island’s wild horses. These horses have inhabited Sable Island since the 1700s, creating a long-standing connection to the land that continues to intrigue researchers and photographers alike.

Lidgard has spent years gathering a comprehensive collection of photographs showcasing the wild horses in their natural habitat. Over time, he has developed a profound understanding of how these animals have evolved to survive in such a challenging environment, surrounded by more than 300 shipwrecks. This survival story is indicative of their resilience and strength, traits that Lidgard emphasizes in both his photographic work and writing.

In preparing his book, Lidgard has meticulously researched existing scientific literature surrounding Sable Island’s horse population, integrating this knowledge into his narrative. He aims to present a well-rounded perspective on the horses, their environment, and their behavior throughout the changing seasons. The book features captivating images taken at various times of the year, highlighting the stark contrasts between the lushness of summer and the cold, harsh winters, during which the horses' personalities are often more prominently displayed.

During a recent interview, Lidgard expressed his admiration for the horses and their ability to adapt to the island’s harsh conditions. He described a sense of awe that he developed over the years, motivating him to share this remarkable story with a broader audience. His intention is to invite readers into the world of these animals, allowing them to appreciate not only their beauty but also the intricate relationship they share with their environment.

"I just felt like I wanted to also be able to share that with people," Lidgard remarked. "It’s really inviting people in to be able to see this animal that has been able to adapt to this really hostile environment."

Through “Sable Untamed,” Lidgard hopes to convey the incredible narrative of Sable Island’s wild horses and spark interest in conservation efforts to protect these remarkable creatures and their habitat. By blending stunning photography with scientific insight, he aims to connect readers emotionally to the island's natural beauty and the resilience of its equine inhabitants.
