"West Bank Man Killed by Israeli Forces During Crossing"

CAIRO (AP) — A Palestinian man was shot and killed by Israeli forces on Sunday at a concrete barrier separating the occupied West Bank from Jerusalem, the Palestinian Health Ministry said

On Sunday, Israeli forces shot and killed a 26-year-old Palestinian man, Imad Haroun Ishtayeh, at a concrete barrier that separates the occupied West Bank from Jerusalem, as reported by the Palestinian Health Ministry. Ishtayeh, who hailed from Salem town, located east of Nablus, was shot in the thigh while attempting to cross into Israel and later succumbed to his injuries at the Palestinian Medical Complex in Ramallah.

Video footage circulating on social media depicted a group of people carrying Ishtayeh's body and descending from the barrier, with traffic continuing to flow around them. As of the latest reports, Israeli police had not provided any statement regarding the incident.

Prior to his death, Ishtayeh had managed a poultry slaughterhouse in his hometown and was responsible for supporting his ill father financially. However, due to a significant economic downturn in the West Bank, he decided to seek employment in Israel. His relative, Nasser Ishtayeh, revealed that Imad made his first attempt to cross the barrier on Saturday but encountered heavy Israeli security presence. After spending the night among others with similar intentions, he tried again on Sunday morning, leading to the tragic incident where he was shot.

Nasser Ishtayeh stated, "He was directly shot with live bullets and died at the hospital," illustrating the dangers faced by Palestinians attempting to cross into Israel in search of work. In recent years, there has been a growing trend of Palestinians illegally entering Israel to find jobs, particularly as the economic situation worsened in the West Bank.

The conflict has intensified since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered warfare in Gaza. This situation has led to increased restrictions on access to work permits for Palestinians, resulting in higher unemployment rates in the West Bank. Reports indicate that tens of thousands of Palestinians had held work permits in the past, but access has been drastically limited since the escalation of violence.

According to the Palestinian official WAFA news agency, around 50 Palestinian workers have been killed by Israeli fire since the conflict began, and over 38,000 individuals have been arrested, although many were later released. This data reflects the rising tensions and the implications for the Palestinian population amid a deteriorating economic and security situation.

The situation of Imad Haroun Ishtayeh is emblematic of the broader struggles faced by many Palestinians from the West Bank, who are now increasingly desperate for work as their economic conditions deteriorate. The tragic incident surrounding his death underscores the ongoing tensions at the barrier and the precarious choices faced by those seeking to cross into Israel for employment.
