DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — In a significant escalation of military tensions, the United States conducted airstrikes targeting Iranian radar and drone control sites in Iran following the shootdown of an American MQ-1 Predator drone over the weekend. The American military reported the strikes took place around the city of Geruk and on Qeshm Island, with Iranian forces acknowledging their retaliatory actions amid heightened hostilities. This exchange of fire comes as Kuwait confirmed its air defenses intercepted incoming drone and missile threats.
The incidents underscore the precarious nature of a ceasefire that has been in effect for several weeks in the ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran. Despite negotiations aimed at extending this ceasefire, aggressive actions from both sides have continued. Iran has retained its strategic control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global energy trade, as around 20% of all oil and natural gas traded worldwide passes through this narrow gateway to the Persian Gulf.
As military actions intensify, Israel has extended its occupation of Lebanon beyond the Litani River, which has enabled militant group Hezbollah to escalate its drone assaults into Israel. This regional conflict continues to unravel as broader geopolitical dynamics play out.
The U.S. military's Central Command stated that the airstrikes, described as "measured and deliberate," were a direct response to what they labeled as "aggressive Iranian actions," specifically the drone shootdown that occurred over international waters. In the aftermath, U.S. fighter jets targeted and eliminated Iranian air defenses, a ground control station, and two attack drones that posed imminent threats to maritime traffic in the region.
Although the MQ-1 Predator drone has largely been phased out of the U.S. Air Force's active fleet, which now primarily operates the advanced MQ-9 Reaper, it remains in service with the U.S. Army. Fortunately, the U.S. military confirmed that no American troops were injured during these recent exchanges.
In further developments, early Monday morning, Kuwait's air defenses engaged and intercepted incoming threats. Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard issued a statement, reported by state-run IRNA, acting in response to U.S. forces targeting a telecommunications tower on an island. The Guard claimed to have executed a counterattack, though they did not specify the location, suggesting it referred to the threat against Kuwait.
