Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that he has yet to form an opinion concerning Ontario Premier Doug Ford's proposal to expand the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, located on the Toronto Islands. Carney indicated his preference to await the outcome of extensive consultations, anticipated to commence shortly, before reaching any conclusions regarding the expansion plans.
Premier Ford has asserted that the federal government supports the expansion; however, the Carney administration has maintained a position of public noncommittal. This has led to uncertainty regarding the future of the airport expansion amidst the ongoing discussions.
In a related development, Premier Ford emphasized the importance of preserving the rest of the Toronto Islands after the province acquired the city’s stake in Billy Bishop Airport. The recent legislative actions passed by the province have granted it control over all land on the islands where the airport is situated.
Despite these legislative changes, the province has committed to cooperating with the city to utilize only the necessary land required for the expansion of Billy Bishop Airport. This cautious approach seems to reflect concerns about maintaining the ecological and recreational integrity of the Toronto Islands.
The new legislation also provided the province with the authority to replace Toronto in a tripartite agreement that regulates the airport land, an agreement originally established among the city, the federal government, and the Toronto Port Authority, which operates as a federal entity.
As discussions progress, stakeholders will be keenly observing the interaction between local government, provincial interests, and federal support regarding the future of Billy Bishop Airport and its implications for the surrounding Toronto Islands. The situation remains dynamic, with varying perspectives on the importance of airport expansion versus the preservation of natural spaces.
