RCMP Officer Charged in Family's Illegal Border Entry

MONTREAL — RCMP say a 36-year-old officer from Quebec is facing charges after allegedly taking part in organizing the entry of a family member into Canada in September 2024 through an unguarded path

MONTREAL — A 36-year-old officer from Quebec, Aaron Baringue, is facing serious charges after allegedly participating in the unlawful entry of a family member into Canada via an unguarded path. The incident reportedly took place in September 2024, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have confirmed that Baringue has been charged with breach of trust and obstruction. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 20.

Baringue, a resident of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, is accused of driving to the United States while off-duty to retrieve his family member. Following this, he allegedly transported the individual to a location near St-Armand, Quebec, where the family member entered Canada illegally. The RCMP officer notified his supervisor about the illegal border crossing the following day after U.S. border officials reported the incident.

Following his report, Baringue was arrested soon after and has been under suspension since that time. According to Cst. Marie-Pierre Guertin of the RCMP, the family member had previously been denied entry into Canada, highlighting the gravity of the officer's actions.

Guertin elaborated that Baringue “drove to the United States and drove the family member to an unguarded path at the border, where the individual entered illegally into Canada.” Subsequently, the person was handed over to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) for further processing.

The investigation into Baringue’s conduct was carried out by the RCMP’s Special Investigations Unit, with support from both CBSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Guertin stressed the thoroughness of the investigation, stating, “This was a very rigorous investigation.” She emphasized that Baringue did not receive any preferential treatment, reaffirming that the RCMP treats such investigations like any other involving Criminal Code charges.

Baringue had been serving as a patrol officer with the Champlain Integrated Border Enforcement Team since 2019. This was the only position he held within the RCMP. The involvement of a police officer in facilitating an illegal entry raises significant concerns about integrity and public trust in law enforcement agencies.

The incident highlights not only the breach of duty by an officer but also the collaborative enforcement efforts between Canadian and U.S. border agencies in addressing such illegal activities. The case is part of an ongoing effort to maintain the integrity of the border and ensure that all individuals adhere to immigration laws.
