TOKYO (AP) – Japan's H3 rocket successfully returned to flight on Friday, launching a new low-cost variant amidst a backdrop of previous mission failures. This successful mission is vital for Japan’s flagship rocket, which has faced challenges in a competitive space industry. The launch took place at the Tanegashima Space Center, located on a southwestern Japanese island, early Friday morning. According to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the rocket's second stage reached the targeted orbit, and six small satellites developed by various universities and organizations were believed to have separated successfully from the launch vehicle.
Friday's mission marked the inaugural flight of the H3 rocket's 030 configuration, which is equipped with triple liquid-fuel LE-9 engines and omits rocket boosters. This new variant is designed to be a more affordable option, aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of Japan’s offerings in the space launch market. The 030 configuration is one of three designed to cater to a broad spectrum of customer requirements.
This successful test comes after two prior failures experienced by the H3 model, which has replaced the H-2A rocket, previously known for its impressive near-perfect success rate. The H3 rocket is positioned to be more cost-effective in a global space market increasingly dominated by companies like Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Japan emphasizes that a stable and commercially competitive launch capability is essential for its space program and national security.
In its debut flight back in March 2023, the H3 rocket was unable to ignite its second-stage engine, while in December, it launched with a navigation satellite but failed to achieve the intended orbit due to a malfunction in the second-stage engine. The H3 rocket had remained grounded since December, and another failure on Friday would have posed a significant setback to Japan's future space endeavors, which include an ambitious Mars mission slated for 2028. Furthermore, a smaller project, the Epsilon S series, has experienced delays due to a fire during testing in 2024.
JAXA and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which are collaborating on the H3 rocket’s development, aim to achieve a launch frequency of six to eight times per year. This latest successful launch represents a critical milestone for Japan’s ambitions in space exploration and commercial satellite deployment.
