CHICAGO (AP) - A modern advancement in surgical technology, the NanoNeedle scope 2.0, is revolutionizing recovery times for athletes suffering from various injuries. Several prominent professional athletes have endorsed this innovative instrument, which is a miniaturized and flexible version of traditional arthroscopes. The new tool is garnering attention from surgeons who see its potential benefits in streamlining surgical procedures and enhancing recovery.
The NanoNeedle scope, measuring just 1.9 millimeters in diameter compared to the 4-millimeter traditional scopes, was recently utilized by Cy Young Award winners Tarik Skubal and Blake Snell during elbow surgeries. Connor Hellebuyck, the NHL's 2025 Hart Trophy winner, also had the technology employed for knee surgery. With a growing list of advocates, many believe the full application of this technology is only beginning.
Dr. Neal ElAttrache, head team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Rams, has noted that the NanoNeedle scope minimizes pain, inflammation, and tissue damage, dramatically reducing recovery time. “Every time I’ve used it, different types of procedures occur to me that we could do,” he commented, underscoring its versatility. According to ElAttrache, surgeries performed with the NanoNeedle result in considerably less surgical trauma.
Star athletes have been able to return to playing ahead of typical recovery timelines following procedures with the NanoNeedle. For instance, Skubal underwent the removal of a loose body from his left elbow on May 6, expecting a two to three-month recovery but is set to return just 5 1/2 weeks later. Snell’s procedure involved a more extensive operation, yet ElAttrache remains optimistic about his return timeline as well.
Hellebuyck also experienced an expedited recovery. After having arthroscopic knee surgery on November 22, he returned to the ice for the Winnipeg Jets just three weeks later, surpassing the anticipated recovery period of four to six weeks. Further applications of the NanoNeedle have been observed among NFL players, including surgeries on team members of the Cleveland Browns. Dr. James Voos, the Browns' head physician, highlighted the NanoNeedle's effectiveness for treating ankle and elbow injuries, noting its value in easier diagnosis and procedures for younger athletes.
The NanoNeedle’s development, spearheaded by Arthrex—a Florida-based medical supply company—culminated in the release of the current version in August, following previous iterations. Ryan Kellar, a senior product manager at Arthrex, stated that their third version is already in use, with a fourth iteration expected to launch soon. The new designs focus on improved visualization while retaining the benefits of a less invasive approach to orthopedic care.
Dr. Kyle Hammond, head team physician for the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Hawks, praised the NanoNeedle for its high-quality camera and video feed. Although he has not yet used it on a patient, he recognizes its potential. He noted other companies have created similar devices, yet the NanoNeedle stands out for its ease of use and effective imaging capabilities.
Concerns about the cost of disposable instruments like the NanoNeedle compared to sterilizable traditional scopes remain, as Dr. Hammond explained. A thorough assessment of the costs against the potential gains in efficiency is needed to determine the broader impact of NanoNeedle use in clinical settings.
Dr. Brian Cole, the head physician for the Chicago Bulls, emphasized that the success of the NanoNeedle will hinge on clinicians’ willingness to integrate this technology into their practice. He indicated that this shift toward less invasive and cost-effective orthopedic care aligns with current trends in medicine, signifying innovation that may redefine surgical standards.
