BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — A tragic series of collisions on a highway in western Hungary resulted in the deaths of eight individuals early Friday morning, according to local police authorities. The incidents occurred near the city of Gyor around 4:30 a.m., initiating a devastating chain of events that involved two separate accidents.
The first collision involved a truck that caught fire after colliding with a construction vehicle. This accident claimed the life of one person and prompted significant traffic disruptions on the highway. In response to the initial crash, emergency services were dispatched to the scene, resulting in one lane of the M1 highway heading toward Austria being closed to facilitate rescue operations and traffic management.
Approximately half an hour later, a more catastrophic event unfolded when a minibus with Moldovan license plates crashed into a truck that had stopped on the highway due to the aftermath of the previous accident. This second collision resulted in the deaths of seven people, in addition to the individual who lost their life in the initial incident, bringing the total fatalities to eight. Furthermore, two people suffered serious injuries and were transported to nearby medical facilities for urgent care.
