WASHINGTON (AP) — AI giant Anthropic announced on Friday that it has taken its latest artificial intelligence models, named Fable 5 and Mythos 5, offline in compliance with a directive issued by the Trump administration. This action is intended to prevent the use of these advanced AI models by foreign nationals.

The decision to implement export controls represents the U.S. government's most significant effort to date in restricting access to highly advanced AI technologies. Anthropic had only recently released Fable 5 to the public, a model that is a limited version of the more sophisticated Mythos 5. Access to Mythos 5 has been tightly controlled by the company due to concerns related to cybersecurity.

In an official statement, Anthropic expressed its disagreement with how the government has managed the situation. The company received the directive on Friday afternoon, which did not clarify the specific national security concerns prompting this action. Anthropic stated, "We believe the government should have the ability to block unsafe deployments, as part of a statutory process that is transparent, fair, clear, and grounded in technical facts." The company criticized the lack of adherence to these principles in the current directive.

Anthropic characterized the government's action as a "misunderstanding" and expressed its hope of restoring access to both AI models "as soon as possible." The Commerce Department has not yet provided a comment regarding this issue.

This development comes just ten days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order that established a framework for the federal government to evaluate the national security risks associated with the most advanced AI systems. The order indicated that participation by AI developers in this evaluation process would be voluntary and aims to maintain oversight before public release.
