PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A tragic event unfolded last month at a lumber mill in Maine, resulting in the death of a second firefighter due to injuries sustained while combating a fire and explosion. The incident occurred on May 15 at Robbins Lumber in Searsmont, where thick plumes of black smoke were seen rising into the sky, leading to an extensive response from numerous firefighting teams across the state.
Searsmont Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Woodbury, aged 76, succumbed to his injuries on a Sunday morning, as confirmed by the Maine Department of Public Safety. Alongside Woodbury, Andrew Cross, a 27-year-old member of the Morrill Volunteer Fire Department, also tragically lost his life in the incident, marking a significant loss for the local firefighting community.
Maine Governor Janet Mills expressed her condolences, stating, “Wayne gave his life to protect his community, and his sacrifice and example will never be forgotten. On behalf of the people of Maine, I extend my deepest condolences to the Searsmont Fire Department, to his community, and to all impacted by this devastating loss.” The outpouring of support underscores the impact of this tragedy on the local community and beyond.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire is still underway. According to authorities, the fire was deemed accidental and is believed to have originated at the base of a silo within the lumber mill. A rapid ignition of particulate material resulted in a catastrophic explosion in the silo, causing it to lift from its concrete foundation and unleash sizable quantities of sawdust and other materials. Following this, the silo toppled and set the surrounding area ablaze.
Lumber mills like Robbins are recognized as significant sources of combustible dust, a common hazard in the industry. Maine's lumber and wood products sector plays a crucial role in the state's economy, providing thousands of jobs and contributing billions of dollars in economic activity annually.
