PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) – On Saturday, two roadside bombs exploded in the troubled northwestern region of Pakistan, resulting in the deaths of at least seven individuals. The incidents occurred in Bannu, a district located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which shares a border with Afghanistan.

The first explosion targeted a vehicle, killing five people, while the second blast detonated as rescuers arrived on the scene to assist the victims of the first attack. Senior police official Yasir Afridi reported that both bombs were controlled remotely and that three others sustained injuries in the two blasts. Following the incidents, a search operation was initiated to locate those responsible for the attacks.

While no group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombings, the suspicion is likely to fall on the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). This group has been implicated in numerous similar attacks in the past, highlighting the ongoing threat of militant violence in the region.

In response to the attacks, President Asif Ali Zardari issued a strong condemnation. In his statement, he expressed condolences to the families of the victims and offered prayers for the swift recovery of those injured. He explicitly warned against "internal and external handlers of terrorism," referring to those who provide safe havens, logistical support, and financial aid to militant networks.

Pakistan has witnessed a notable increase in militant violence over the recent years, much of which has been attributed to the TTP. This group is distinct from, yet allied with, Afghanistan's Taliban, who took control in Kabul in 2021. Pakistani officials have indicated that many TTP leaders and militants have found refuge across the border in Afghanistan, further complicating the security landscape of the region.

Overall, these recent bombings underscore the persistent challenges Pakistan faces in combating terrorism and the broader implications for regional stability, especially concerning the influence of the TTP and its connections to the Taliban in Afghanistan.
