WASHINGTON (AP) — Following the renovation of Washington's Reflecting Pool, which was authorized by former President Donald Trump, concerns have arisen regarding its current condition, which features peeling paint and algae growth. Trump has claimed that the damage inflicted on the pool is the result of intentional vandalism.
On Friday night, Trump took to his social media platform to voice his concerns, stating, “We’ve had some real problems with Vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool. Just like three days ago, they destroyed the grass outside of the Pool; they’ve also done everything possible to hurt the inside surface that was just installed.” However, he did not provide any evidence to back up his allegations.
The agencies responsible for law enforcement and maintenance on the National Mall, including the U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, and the Interior Department, did not respond immediately to requests for comments regarding Trump’s claims. The Washington Post reported that Park Police arrested an individual on Friday who was peeling paint from the pool, although this explains neither the algae bloom that has affected the water quality nor the numerous areas of loose blue paint that have detached from the pool's bottom.
Trump further expressed his suspicions by suggesting that the damage might be linked to chemicals used to deface the National Mall. He referenced the phrase “86 47,” found etched in discolored grass, purportedly as a threat to him as the 47th president. The number 86 is often used in slang to mean "getting rid of" something. Authorities are currently investigating this incident.
The former president’s claims come in the wake of increasing scrutiny over the deteriorating state of the Reflecting Pool, which he had renovated at a cost of over $14 million in preparation for the upcoming America 250 celebrations. Originally intended to have blue water reminiscent of the American flag, the pool has reportedly been plagued by an algae bloom that has reverted its water back to a greenish hue. Federal workers have since treated the pool with chemicals to eradicate the algae, but this has resulted in the loss of large sections of blue paint, exposing the rocky bottom of the pool.
The condition of the Reflecting Pool has become a focal point of criticism for Trump, who is known for his emphasis on maintaining national landmarks. As updates on the situation continue to emerge, it remains to be seen how the agencies in charge will respond to both the allegations of vandalism and the pool's ongoing maintenance issues.
