The BIO International Convention, which is recognized as the largest biotechnology conference globally, is set to take place next week from June 22 to June 25 in San Diego, California. This year, Nova Scotia's life sciences and biotechnology sectors will have a significant presence at the event, showcasing the province's innovations and advancements in these fields.

Seven companies based in Nova Scotia will be featured at the conference, along with the presence of Premier Tim Houston. The Premier emphasized the importance of technology and trials in delivering faster and better healthcare while simultaneously generating employment opportunities within the province. In a news release, he stated, “Through better technology and trials, we can deliver faster, better healthcare, while creating good job opportunities in our province.”

During the conference, Premier Houston is scheduled to participate in a roundtable discussion alongside representatives from Atlantic Canada. He will also address an international audience to highlight the advancements made by Nova Scotia in the life sciences sector. The goal of showcasing these strengths is to explore potential partnerships that could further enhance the province's life sciences capabilities and underline the critical role of this sector in promoting health outcomes and driving economic growth.

According to the news release, Nova Scotia's life sciences sector has made considerable advancements since the previous BIO conference held last year. Notable progress includes the removal of barriers that previously hindered Nova Scotians from participating in medical research, which could lead to groundbreaking discoveries. Additionally, in 2025, the province invested in Life Sciences Nova Scotia to support companies in the development, testing, and commercialization of their products.

Premier Houston remarked on the successes already achieved in utilizing technology to connect patient records, which has significantly improved diagnosis and fostered innovation within medical research. He expressed confidence that similar approaches would continue to enhance patient care and create new economic opportunities for the province.

This impressive conference attracts over 20,000 industry leaders from different parts of the globe every year, facilitating networking and collaboration opportunities among key stakeholders in the biotechnology sector.
