KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A tragic incident occurred in the city of Sumy, northeastern Ukraine, where a Russian drone strike resulted in the deaths of three members of a family, including a 36-year-old man, his 13-year-old son, and the man's 73-year-old mother-in-law. The attack, reported on Monday by regional official Oleh Hryhorov, also left two others injured, including the man's partner and their 10-year-old son.
This attack is part of a broader pattern of Russian military actions against civilian areas in Ukraine, which have reportedly intensified since the all-out invasion that began over four years ago. According to a United Nations report, more than 16,000 civilians have lost their lives in the ongoing conflict. Humanitarian efforts led by the United States and other nations have been unsuccessful in halting the violence.
In recent months, the number of civilian casualties has seen a significant increase. The U.N. Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine noted that civilian deaths rose sharply, especially in May, when at least 274 civilians were killed and 1,763 injured. This marked the highest monthly total of casualties since April 2022, with most injuries occurring in cities that are far from the front lines of active military engagements.
Another notable attack occurred in Zaporizhzhia, a southeastern Ukrainian city, where a Russian drone strike killed a woman and injured three other individuals, including an 11-year-old boy, as reported by the regional head Ivan Fedorov. In total, Russian forces launched 88 long-range drones and one ballistic missile overnight, with Ukraine’s air defense reportedly managing to shoot down or jam 79 of those drones.
On the other hand, Ukraine has been actively retaliating by targeting Russian territories and facilities. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that Ukrainian forces launched numerous drones toward Russia, particularly targeting oil installations, military transport, and other infrastructure important to the military efforts. They reported intercepting 301 Ukrainian drones over various regions, including Crimea and the Black Sea.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that 84 Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow were shot down. Although he did not specify if the attacks caused any damage, flights at all four airports in Moscow were temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure. Furthermore, local authorities in the Vladimir and Tula regions reported evacuations of residential buildings due to the threat posed by the drone attacks.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in severe repercussions for civilian safety and security. As the situation unfolds, both military actions and counteractions continue to escalate, leaving communities in Ukraine and Russia on high alert.
