TOKYO (AP) – Heavy downpours have caused significant flooding in parts of western Japan as two tropical storms approach the region, exacerbating a seasonal rain front that has lingered above the country. On Friday, residents faced mounting challenges as Storm Mekkhala made its way off the western coast of Japan's southern remote island of Amami, with the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reporting its progress towards the northeast.
As of late afternoon on Friday, Storm Mekkhala was closely followed by another storm named Higos, which was also traveling nearby. Both storms are anticipated to reach the Tokyo area on Saturday, bringing with them the promise of heavy rainfall. The weather conditions have raised alarms, and the JMA has put out warnings for various regions.
On Friday morning, local reports indicated that injuries had already occurred due to these severe weather conditions. A man was reported injured after falling into a waterway in Nara, a situation that underscored the dangers posed by the flooding. Furthermore, television footage captured from Kyoto displayed the Kamo River, which was swollen and muddy, highlighting the severity of the flooding.
In response to the deteriorating conditions, authorities issued flooding alerts for several areas, including parts of Kyoto and Osaka, alongside other regions impacted in western Japan. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported that over 30 homes were affected by flooding in both Nara and Hiroshima on Friday. This sharp rise in water levels has disrupted local infrastructure, leading to significant interruptions in train services and flight operations across the affected areas.
The ongoing weather events are part of a broader seasonal trend that has brought anthropogenic implications to the forefront, raising concerns over preparedness and response strategies in local communities.
