A federal immigration agent fatally shot a motorist in Biddeford, Maine, on Monday, marking the second incident in a week involving deadly use of force by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. According to Senator Angus King, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin informed him that the agent opened fire after the 26-year-old Colombian man attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon while being pursued for deportation.
Details from the scene indicated that the man was in a white sedan that was moving erratically in circles at an intersection. Bystander video captured the moment, showing agents attempting to intervene. Images revealed bullet holes in the windshield of the vehicle. Notably, the agents involved in the shooting did not have body-worn cameras, as confirmed by King, who mentioned that the FBI is leading the investigation into the incident.
Senator King raised critical questions regarding the justification of the use of deadly force, emphasizing the need for transparency and thoroughness in the investigation. Meanwhile, Senator Susan Collins called for an impartial inquiry into the shooting. The Maine House Speaker, Ryan Fecteau, also commented on the incident, affirming that both state police and the Department of Public Safety were at the scene to gather pertinent details.
Advocates from the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition and Presente! revealed that the man who was shot was authorized to work in the U.S. and possessed a Social Security number. Following the shooting, his family reached out to advocacy groups for support. Mufalo Chitam, executive director of the Immigrants’ Rights Coalition, described the victim as part of a young family and expressed their deep grief and anger over the incident, insisting that this tragedy should not be treated as routine.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a gathering of anti-ICE demonstrators formed near the scene in Biddeford. One protester, Amy Goodman, expressed her outrage, holding a sign that read, “Stop Killing Us.” Project Relief, another immigrant rights group, highlighted that the deceased was a young community member and demanded justice and support for both his family and the community at large. Protests were planned to oppose ICE in several locations, with activists demanding an end to ICE’s operations in the community.
Maine Governor Janet Mills released a statement indicating she had been briefed on the situation, assuring that local and state law enforcement would work with federal officials to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident. She acknowledged the fear and concern such events induce in the community.
The incident in Maine is notably the ninth reported fatality linked to federal immigration officials since the onset of the Trump administration’s intensified immigration enforcement push. The shooting comes amid an uptick in ICE operations, which recently culminated in a significant number of arrests across various regions. Representative Chellie Pingree emphasized her desire for clarity regarding the reasons behind ICE’s presence in Maine during a social media address.
This occurrence follows a series of previous tragedies associated with ICE activities, including the recent fatal shooting of a construction worker in Houston. Earlier this year, ICE conducted numerous operations in Maine, leading to large-scale protests against the agency. The agency's operations, often branded with maritime terminology reflecting the local seafood industry, drew considerable criticism for the tactics employed and the perceived targeting of immigrant communities.
