The Environment Canada forecast indicates that rain and cooler weather are expected in Halifax County. This forecast comes as a wildfire continues to smolder in the region nearly a week after it was initially discovered.
As of Tuesday morning, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reported that the fire along Mooseland Road is estimated to cover 1,447 hectares. Firefighters, supported by aerial resources, are actively working to control the flames and have restricted access between 2124 and 2890 Mooseland Road to protect the public.
Officials continue to urge residents and visitors to steer clear of the affected area. In the ongoing battle against the blaze, two helicopters and 39 members of the DNR are currently on-site, with ground crews working tirelessly to contain the situation.
Additionally, fixed-wing water bombers, which had previously assisted in extinguishing the flames, are on standby. However, the latest updates suggest that their deployment is not anticipated at this time, indicating that current efforts on the ground may be sufficient for the moment.
Recently, a rain system swept over the province, which provided much-needed support for firefighting crews, enabling them to gain control of the fire and establish breaks to prevent further spread. This downpour was instrumental in reducing the wildfire's size after it prompted the evacuation of approximately 100 to 150 homes last week.
Despite these positive developments, conditions on Tuesday posed challenges for firefighting efforts, as the weather was sunny with temperatures reaching 25°C. However, by nighttime, clouds are expected to roll in, bringing with them fog patches due to humidity interacting with cooler wind gusts.
Looking ahead, the forecast for Wednesday predicts "rain at times heavy beginning early in the morning, then changing to drizzle or showers early in the afternoon." There is also a risk of thunderstorms during the morning and early afternoon. Thursday is expected to continue the trend with periods of rain and temperatures peaking at around 16°C.
