90-year-old marathoner Yul Kwan and 102-year-old record-breaking swimmer Betty Brussel exemplify how staying active can help challenge the aging process. Kwan began training for races at the age of 60 and has maintained his passion for running ever since. He expressed, “I don’t really feel like I’m ninety years old, honestly. And I like to behave younger than 90. But I hope I will succeed. I dream of running a marathon at 100.” Meanwhile, Brussel broke three world records in swimming in 2024 and enjoys dancing when she’s not in the pool. “I have a lovely room with space for dancing. I put some music on and I dance,” she said.
According to Kwan, the key to happiness lies in health, stating, “The ultimate purpose of a human being is happiness, I strongly believe. Dr. Michael Kobor from the center explained their focus on understanding the biology of aging. They seek to find preventative measures that could delay biological aging. Canada is currently classified as a “super-aged” country, where over 20 percent of the population is above 65. This demographic shift presents challenges such as a rise in age-related illnesses, which impact individuals, families, and the healthcare system. Kobor noted the increasing costs and care home shortages associated with aging, emphasizing that extending the health span closer to the lifespan is beneficial for all parties involved.
Research indicates that age-related ailments like cancer, dementia, and heart disease become more prevalent as individuals age, with age itself being a common factor. However, scientists at the B.C. research firm are investigating if aging can be altered for healthier aging outcomes. Key research is centered on the field of epigenetics, which Dr. Kobor describes as how genes can function like light bulbs, changing depending on life experiences and environments.
Researchers can assess a person's biological age—how old their body is compared to their actual age—by measuring epigenetic changes using DNA samples. Dr. Kobor elaborated that those changes are reversible and can be influenced by lifestyle choices. For instance, a fit 90-year-old might have an epigenetic age of 75, while a smoker of the same age may have an epigenetic age closer to 98.
Assistant Professor James McKendry, specializing in Nutrition and Healthy Aging at UBC, investigates the effects of exercise and diet on biological aging. By utilizing a bioelectrical impedance analyzer, he studies muscle changes over time. His research indicates that older adults may require 50 to 100 percent more protein daily than the standard recommendation to aid muscle maintenance, which is critical as aging complicates protein processing in the body.
McKendry emphasized that it’s never too late to begin exercising, stating that the greatest benefits come from transitioning from inactivity to activity. Consistent engagement in enjoyable activities leads to improvements in health and fitness.
Connecting Socially for Better Health

New research suggests loneliness, which often increases with age, significantly impacts health—showing a 50 percent elevated risk of earlier death and an increased likelihood of dementia, falls, and chronic diseases.
Dr. Grace Park, a family physician, points out that loneliness can lead to reliance on the healthcare system, with underserved seniors remaining at risk. As a response to this isolation, programs like the social prescribing initiative at the Semiahmoo Arts Society in Surrey, B.C., aim to connect isolated seniors with community resources.
Program coordinator Leila Reshid explained that the initiative focuses on reducing isolation and enhancing independence among seniors.
