On July 24, 2026, the provincial internet child exploitation unit was alerted by a social media company regarding the transmission of child sexual abuse material on its platform. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received the tip-off in April and initiated an investigation that led them to a 67-year-old man, Steven Frederick Nelson, residing in Pictou County, Nova Scotia.
As part of their investigation, the RCMP executed a search warrant at Nelson's home located on Glen Road East in Central Caribou. During the search operation, authorities discovered multiple electronic devices and firearms. Following these findings, Nelson faced several serious charges, including:
- Two counts of possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
- Transmitting child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
- Unlicensed possession of a firearm.
- Unsafe storage of a firearm.
The investigation indicates that there could potentially be more victims who are now adults, and who may have been targeted by Nelson several years ago. The RCMP urges anyone who suspects they might have been a victim of Nelson's actions to come forward and contact the police. According to their press release, “There’s no time limit on reporting sexual offences. The Nova Scotia RCMP recognizes the lasting impact these crimes can have on victims, regardless of how much time has passed.”
