Kyla Gaudiuso recently discovered that her home in Faulder, British Columbia, was destroyed by the Bald Range wildfire. She received a photo showcasing the ridge where her house once stood, now entirely engulfed in flames. This devastating wildfire has impacted the community west of Summerland, claiming one life and forcing over 20,000 residents around Okanagan Lake to evacuate.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that an 80-year-old woman lost her life while attempting to escape her home in Meadow Valley, located west of Summerland, over the weekend. In response to the escalating crisis, the British Columbia government declared a provincial state of emergency on Saturday, acknowledging that property losses are significant, although specific details remain limited.
Gaudiuso has not received official confirmation regarding her home, but the unsettling image has led her to believe it has been lost. The situation in Faulder is dire, with numerous properties believed to have been consumed by flames. Video footage has revealed that the village, which has a population of around 215 residents, has been left in ruins, smoldering in the aftermath of the fire.
She recounted the harrowing chaos that erupted as residents were informed about the approaching fire and the evacuation commenced, describing the scene as “pandemonium.” Although Gaudiuso managed to reach safety and is currently staying with a friend in Penticton, she expressed a strong desire for the blaze to be contained swiftly so that she can assess the damage to her property firsthand. “I would love to just see like a picture or know for sure like what’s left on our property because I’m kind of one of those people, it doesn’t really seem real,” she stated in an interview. “I have to see it to believe it.”
The BC Wildfire Service has reported that the fire has expanded to approximately 136 square kilometers and continues to burn uncontrollably near Summerland, which has a population of about 12,000 people and has been ordered to evacuate. Current evacuation orders are in effect for around 10,000 homes in various regions, including Summerland, Peachland, and parts of the Okanagan-Similkameen and Central Okanagan regional districts, as well as on lands belonging to the Penticton Indian Band.
Additionally, more than 3,200 homes are currently under lower-level evacuation alerts extending north past Peachland towards Highway 97C and south past Penticton along the city's western outskirts. As the situation develops, Federal Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski confirmed via social media that she has authorized federal assistance to provide shelter and accommodations for those who have been displaced by the fire.
In an update on Sunday, the wildfire service reported an increase in fire behavior, reaching a Rank 4 classification, indicating a highly vigorous surface fire after a period of lower activity earlier in the day. A crucial focus for firefighting efforts is the area between Fish Lake and Garnet Valley, where crews are actively working to limit further fire spread and mitigate impacts on structures.
