Rogers Communications has announced the activation of free satellite services for all its customers in British Columbia in response to the ongoing provincewide state of emergency due to wildfires. The initiative aims to provide reliable connectivity in areas where conventional cellular coverage is compromised.

The telecommunications company emphasized that its Rogers Satellite services are designed to maintain communication in regions where standard cell coverage may not be available. This is particularly crucial in situations where cellular towers are damaged by wildfires or when there are hydro outages. Furthermore, the service will also extend reach to remote areas that fall outside the vicinity of cellular towers.

All individual, business, and government customers of Rogers are eligible to access this satellite service. The deployment also serves as a pilot program to explore the use of satellite-to-mobile technology during emergencies and natural disasters, according to the company.

In a statement, Tony Staffieri, the president and CEO of Rogers Communications, expressed the company's commitment to supporting British Columbians affected by the devastating wildfires. He stated, “Our teams are working around the clock to help keep people connected.” Staffieri highlighted that Rogers is the only Canadian carrier offering satellite-to-mobile technology, which adds an essential layer of connectivity precisely where it is most needed. This capability assists families in connecting with loved ones and ensures that first responders can remain in touch while carrying out their duties.

The satellite services provided by Rogers will facilitate communication through text messaging, text-to-911, and various applications such as WhatsApp, Messenger, and Google Maps, available on compatible devices. This feature is particularly significant during crises when traditional communication methods may fail.

As of the latest updates, British Columbia is facing critical wildfire conditions, with 112 active wildfires reported across the province. Out of these, 48 wildfires are deemed to be out of control, highlighting the urgent need for robust communication systems in affected areas.
