OTTAWA - Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced the imposition of new sanctions today targeting five Iranian officials. These sanctions are in response to actions deemed to undermine “international peace, security, and stability,” particularly concerning the blockade in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
The individuals affected by these sanctions include a senior official from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the head of Iran’s foreign policy and national security committee, a naval commander, and the chair of the Iranian energy exporters union. Their roles highlight the Iranian regime's key connections to both military and energy sectors that are pivotal in the ongoing tensions in the region.
As of August 6, nearly 1,500 vessels were reported to be stranded in the Persian Gulf due to the blockade resulting from Iran's actions. This situation illustrates the significant impact Iran's maritime policies have on global trade, particularly in energy supplies, where the Strait of Hormuz serves as a crucial chokepoint for oil exports.
