HALIFAX — Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a heavy rainfall warning for the northern regions of Cape Breton Island. This warning comes as the national weather service has identified a significant reduction in the area’s ability to absorb rain due to previous weather conditions.
The forecast indicates that residents can expect total rainfall amounts ranging from 25 to 40 millimeters, with the potential for even higher accumulation in localized areas. This excessive rain is expected to exacerbate the existing issues caused by previous torrential rainfall that occurred over the weekend, which already led to the destruction of several roads, barriers, and bridges throughout Cape Breton Island and parts of the northern mainland.
Tragically, the severe weather has had dire consequences. A 46-year-old woman from Richmond County was found deceased on Saturday, several hours after her abandoned vehicle was located in the vicinity of a flooded bridge. This incident highlights the dangers posed by the extreme weather conditions affecting the province.
In light of the current weather threats, the province’s Department of Emergency Management strongly advises drivers to adhere to the guidance of local officials concerning road safety conditions.
