PARIS – After nearly six years away from the concert stage, Québec superstar Céline Dion made a triumphant return on Saturday night, delivering a moving performance to nearly 33,000 fans at the Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, just outside of Paris. Her opening message, “On ne change pas” – we don’t change – resonated deeply with the audience as she marked what she described as an emotional comeback following a “rocky road.”
Dion's two-and-a-half-hour concert, which began about 40 minutes late, was filled with familiar sounds as she revisited some of her most significant hits, including “My Heart Will Go On,” “J’irai où tu iras,” and “Pour que tu m’aimes encore.” Despite the health challenges that kept her away from the stage, she delivered powerful vocal performances that elicited sustained applause and emotional responses from her fans, some of whom traveled from across the globe to witness her return.
“Thank you so much! I had promised myself I wouldn’t cry. I don’t keep my promises,” she exclaimed after her first song, visibly emotional as she wiped away tears. This concert marks the beginning of a series of 26 performances set for the fall and spring at the Plenitude Arena.
Dion’s previous tour was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2022 she shared her battle with stiff-person syndrome, a rare autoimmune disease that delayed her return to performances. Although she had previously delivered a moving rendition of “Hymne à l’amour” during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, Saturday night was her first full concert in six years, with an additional 10 shows planned for the upcoming year.
The concert was attended by several celebrities, including former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama. The format of the show varied between emotional, stripped-down piano performances and lively, upbeat segments. Dion engaged with the audience, asking, “Can you hear my heart beating?” as “Destin” concluded, expressing her gratitude for the support and love she felt from her fans.
Throughout the night, Dion opened up about living with her autoimmune disease, highlighting her determination to continue performing. “I learned to live with this fragility,” she shared. “By living alongside it, I learned to tame it. I turned it into my strength to live.” Her performance included lively dances during songs like “Ne bouge pas,” “Dans un autre monde,” and “I’m Alive,” and a surprisingly energetic cover of Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams.”
Costume changes and video montages featuring Dion walking through deserts or dancing complemented the various sections of the concert. She performed alongside her long-time musical director Scott Price and her backup singers, sharing the spotlight during numbers like “J’irai où tu iras” and “Beauty and the Beast.” Despite speculation, no other guest performers appeared on stage that night.
A particularly memorable moment came with her interpretation of the operatic aria “La Wally,” which she delivered from a large, rock-shaped pedestal as snowflakes fell from the ceiling of the arena. Post-performance, she expressed her gratitude to the audience, stating that performing the aria was “a dream” for her.
Among the fans in attendance were two Montreal-based flight attendants, Frédérique Lauzon and Alexandrine Derome, who managed to snag last-minute tickets during a layover. Derome, attending her 24th Dion performance, shared her extensive experience of following the artist across various locations, including Las Vegas and Quebec City.
As the concert drew to a close, Dion wrapped up with beloved French-language tracks such as “Pour que tu m’aimes encore” and “S’il suffisait d’aimer,” encouraging the crowd to sing along. Her final song of the night, “Des milliers de baisers,” left a lasting impression on her audience.
In between songs, Dion took heartfelt moments to connect with her fans, emphasizing the significance of dreaming ambitiously and being aware of the struggles others may face. Consistently conveying her love, she repeated messages of self-care as she blew kisses to the audience.
