Pope Leo XIV Improves After Lung Surgery

ROME (AP) — Pope Leo XIV is on the mend following successful surgery to remove a cancerous nodule from his lung, according to updates from the Vatican and his medical team. His progress has been promising, and he has already resumed work from the hospital as of Thursday.

Dr. Luigi Carbone, the pope's personal physician, and Dr. Stefano Margaritora, the head of thoracic surgery at Gemelli Hospital, provided details on the pope’s recovery. They reported that Leo's post-operative tests are within normal ranges and that his physiotherapy session included full mobility exercises. The pope was able to engage in daily activities independently. The chest X-ray taken post-surgery indicated good recovery of the operated lung, with the overall recovery proceeding as anticipated.

Pope Leo XIV, who is 71 years old, underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove the lower right lobe of his right lung after a suspected cancerous nodule was identified. Subsequent examination confirmed that he was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, the most prevalent form of lung cancer. Medical professionals are currently waiting on additional test results to determine the precise molecular characteristics of the cancer, whether it has spread beyond the lobe, and if further treatment will be required.

In a separate announcement, the Vatican shared that the pope has also resumed his duties in the hospital, which includes reviewing documents and celebrating Mass alongside fellow priests. This gathering has taken place in a specially designated chapel located near his hospital room on the 10th floor.

When queried about potential alterations to Leo’s scheduled trip to South America from November 6 to 17, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni referenced the pope’s earlier statements regarding his plans. On Sunday, Leo expressed gratitude for prayers supporting his imminent pastoral visit to Peru, which also includes stops in Uruguay and Argentina. He appeared optimistic regarding the trip's continuation despite his recent health challenges.

Pope Leo XIV is expected to remain in the hospital for at least a few more days, with a projected discharge around October 20. His successful recovery is being closely monitored by his medical team as they continue to assess the overall impact of the surgery and the implications for his upcoming travel.
