Defence officials have reported that there were no injuries following a serious incident involving a military helicopter aboard a Canadian navy frigate. On October 6, 2023, a Cyclone helicopter was significantly damaged during a night flight landing on the HMCS Ville de Québec, which was operating in the Norwegian Sea.
According to a flight safety report from the Department of National Defence, the mishap occurred as the helicopter was descending for its landing. The two main rotor blades of the helicopter came into contact with its tail boom, leading to the severing of multiple critical components, including the tail rotor drive shaft. This abrupt contact rendered the helicopter inoperable.
The four crew members aboard the Cyclone helicopter acted swiftly during the emergency situation, performing an emergency engine shutdown before promptly evacuating the aircraft. Fortunately, all four personnel were unharmed despite the extensive damage inflicted on the helicopter.
The HMCS Ville de Québec has been deployed at sea since July 2023, participating in Operation Reassurance, which is a NATO mission designed to deter potential Russian aggression in Eastern Europe. This details the ongoing commitment of the Canadian navy to international security operations.
While no technical issues have been identified so far, the investigation into the incident remains active. According to the report, the focus of the inquiry is on various factors including material and systems integrity, environmental conditions, and human factors that could have contributed to this incident.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges and risks associated with military operations at sea, particularly in the context of complex maneuvering and landing protocols. The Canadian navy, along with NATO allies, continues to navigate these operational challenges while ensuring the safety and readiness of its personnel and equipment.
